Missouri Articulation Plan (MAP)
The Missouri plan for statewide articulation in nursing education has
evolved from the Missouri Nursing
Coalition meetings which generated interest in the establishment of
a Nursing Education Articulation Task Force sponsored by the Missouri
State Board of Nursing. The purpose of the Nursing Articulation Task
Force was to develop an articulation model to assure and facilitate
mobility for individual users.
Nursing Education Assumptions
- All types of nursing programs have worth and are valuable in achieving
the goals of access and articulation.
- There is a common core of knowledge, attitudes, cognitive skills,
and psychomotor skills that graduates of all types of nursing programs
should acquire; however, there are distinct differences in the depth,
breadth, scope of preparation and knowledge required for each type of
graduate.
- Nursing programs include practical, associate degree, diploma, baccalaureate,
and masters.
- Each educational institution has the prerogative of establishing its
unique mission, goals and standards of admission, progression, and graduation.
- Sending institutions are those nursing programs who participate in
the MAP and whose graduates are prepared to move to another educational
level.
- Receiving institutions are those nursing programs who participate
in the MAP and accept graduates from the sending institutions.
- The discipline of nursing is dynamic. Therefore, an articulation model
must be periodically evaluated.
- Note: Each educational institution has the prerogative of establishing
its own mission, goals, and curriculum. Additionally, each institution
sets its own standards for admission, progression, and graduation of
students.
Practical Nurse to Associate Degree or Diploma Options - If you
are currently a practical nurse and want to further your career in nursing,
here's what we have arranged for your continued education:
- Direct Transfer: At least 40% of the nursing credits required by the
receiving institution will be awarded by direct transfer; in addition,
3 semester hours of nutrition and 3 semester hours of growth and development
will be awarded.
- Proficiency Examinations: At least 40% of the nursing credits required
by the receiving institution may be awarded through proficiency examinations.
Associate Degree and Diploma, Nurse to Baccalaureate Degree Options
- If you are currently a diploma nurse with an associates degree and want
to further your career in nursing, here's what we have arranged for your
continued education:
- Direct Transfer of Credit: At least one-half of the credits required
for a baccalaureate degree will be transferred from sending institutions
which have documented required competencies and course content required
in the Missouri Nursing Education Articulation Plan.
- Proficiency Examinations: At least one-half of the required nursing
credits may be earned through standardized examinations; i.e., ACT-PEP,
NLN Mobility, college proficiency exams, etc.
- Escrow: At least one-half of the required nursing credits will be
held in escrow and placed on the individual's transcript by the baccalaureate
program after the student has successfully completed at least 34 credit
hours or equivalent of designated nursing course work.
Baccalaureate Degree to Masters in Nursing - If you currently
have your BSN and are wanting to further your career in nursing, here's
what we have arranged for your continued education:
- The sending institution's curriculum will contain
- Introductory Statistics - (lower or upper division) - 3 semester
hours
- Health Assessment - 3 semester hours
- The receiving institutions will accept these two courses as the
only program prerequisites.
Consult with the School of Nursing of your choice to determine additional
options available and to verify participation in the MAP.
